What is in the solution that causes the skin to turn brown?
First, there is the bronzer (food coloring) which helps the technician see where they are spraying. Secondly, the main ingredients are dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Erythrulose, both naturally occurring fruit sugars which react with the amino acids in the top couple of layers of your skin to turn it brown. DHA has been used for over 40 years and has obtained FDA approval as a skin safe coloring agent.
How should I prepare for my tanning session?
You should exfoliate and moisturize (oil free, no ultra hydrating bath products) the day before your session, preferably the night before. Pay close attention to moisturizing more to typical dry areas (i.e., knees, elbows, knuckles, heels). Shave or wax at least one day before your session. DO NOT apply make-up, deodorant, moisturizers or perfumes the day of your treatment.
What do I wear?
As much or as little as you're comfortable with. It just depends on if you want tan lines or not. Full body sprays can be done in shorts and a tube top, bathing suit, disposable undergarments, breast paste-ons (available by Tan On The Go) or nude. A shower cap is not necessary.
What if I'm getting a mani/pedi or waxing?
It's best to have these done before your tanning session, OR the day after (once you've showered). Any waxing MUST be done at least a day before your tanning session. If it is absolutely necessary to have your mani/pedi after your spray tan, please instruct your technician to just color the nails and not rub or massage the area. Otherwise, they may discolor your tan on your legs, arms, hands and feet.
How long before I can shower or workout?
Avoid any contact with water for the first 2 hours. Unless you are sprayed with the Rapid developing solution, we recommend you wait at least 8 hours before rinsing of working out to allow your tan to properly develop. Rapid solutions should be rinsed off no more than 5 hours from the time of your session. Reminder: Only rinse with water for your first shower. Use your hands or gently rinse with a soft cloth. No soap. Wash the palms of your hands only if you are using your hands to rinse. The DHA is still active, even after 8 hours, and will stain your hands. Gently pat dry with a towel.....Do not rub.
What if I receive my spray tan late at night?
Regarding the basic 8 hour solutions: if you receive a late night bronzing, you don't want to have to get up in the middle of the night to rinse off. The solution can be left on until the next morning. Many people choose to wait until the next morning to rinse any way. The longer you wait, the darker your tan will get, and longer it will last. Delaying your rinse will allow the DHA sufficient time to react with the amino acids (proteins) in your skin. Regarding the Rapid Tanning solutions: You must allow for proper rinsing time!!!!
Will the color rinse off in the shower?
The cosmetic bronzer that is visible immediately when you are sprayed will wash off with your first shower, revealing the DHA bronze tan beneath.....A Beautiful Bronze Tan!
How long will my tan last?
Your tan should last 7 to 10 days with proper moisturizing. Sunless spray tanning is not an exact science. Each individual's body chemistry is different, and results will vary based on the individual skin type and pH balance. Tan On The Go uses solutions formulated to provide a color that will appeal to the majority of customers.
What is the best way to maintain and extend the life of my tan?
To get the best results for your tan after your first shower, we strongly suggest using our tan extending lotion twice daily (available by Tan On The Go). The tan extenders are specifically formulated for spray tanning. They will draw the tan deeper into your skin, hence prolonging and building your color. If you choose not to use our tan extenders, it's O.K. to use a quality moisturizer as often as you can. Your results, though, may not be as dramatic and may reduce the length and quality of your tan.

Will the color rub off on my clothes?
Until you shower, you may see a little of the bronzer come off on your clothes. (You may want to bring a towel for your car seat if the session is done away from your home) The solution is water soluble and will wash out. We recommend bringing dark, loose fitting clothing to wear after your session. Important: the bronzer has been known to stain leather, suede, silk, linen or fine materials.
Will swimming affect my tan?
Recreational swimming (i.e. hopping in and out of the pool to cool down and just swimming around) will have little effect on your tan. If you swim laps everyday and are in the pool for extended periods of time, it will shorten the life of your tan. Highly chlorinated hot tubs will make your tan fade faster also.
What if I discover a flaw with my tan?
In the event that you find a flaw in your tan or accidentally spill something on it shortly after your session, we will absolutely touch it up for you. Just try to call within 48 hours so the touch up will match your tan.
Does a spray tan provide SPF protection?
No! Spray tans do not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly. Your skin will appear tanned, even though it's not. This is an artificial tan. Your skin is still exposed and vulnerable to the sun.
